Mt Meru Expeditions

Build altitude. Build confidence. Climb Mount Meru.

Mt Meru.

Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest peak at over 4,500 metres, sits within Arusha National Park and is widely considered the ideal acclimatization trek before Kilimanjaro. The route climbs gradually through forest and grassland, with frequent sightings of buffalo, giraffe, and colobus monkeys along the way. Higher up, trekkers follow the dramatic crater rim before reaching a summit that rewards with spectacular sunrise views, often stretching across to Kilimanjaro. For scenery, wildlife, and altitude preparation, Mount Meru is one of East Africa's finest trekking experiences.

The itinerary

An indicative plan. Every climb is privately tailored to your party’s pace and acclimatisation profile.

DAY 01

Momella Gate → Miriakamba Hut

A small drive from the Hotel to Momella gate Where Your Mount Meru climb begins inside Arusha National Park, where an armed ranger leads the way through open grassland and montane forest. The trail passes buffalo wallows, giant fig trees, clear streams, and troops of black-and-white colobus monkeys moving through the canopy. The ascent is steady but gentle, making this an excellent first day for settling into the rhythm of the mountain.

1,500 m → 2,510 m · 10 KM · 4 H

Tonight · Miriakamba — forest hut band.

Meals · Breakfast (Hotel) | Lunch | Dinner

DAY 02

Miriakamba → Saddle Hut

Leaving the forest behind, the trail climbs into the heather and moorland zone where the landscape becomes more rugged and volcanic. The path opens onto wide views of the Meru caldera, ash cone, and the ridges of Little Meru. As you gain height, the air grows cooler and the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, with giant lobelias and rocky slopes marking the approach to high altitude.

Tonight · Saddle Hut — base for summit bids.

Meals · Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

DAY 03

Summit ridge → Rhino Point → Socialist Peak → Miriakamba

Shortly after midnight, summit day begins. Headlamps cut through the darkness as the trail climbs steeply toward Rhino Point before joining the narrow crater rim ridge. Some sections are exposed and require careful footing, but the reward is extraordinary. At dawn, you reach Socialist Peak, the summit of Mount Meru at 4,566 metres. Sunrise from the summit is one of the finest in Tanzania, often revealing Mount Kilimanjaro floating above a sea of clouds. After time on the summit, descend back to Saddle Hut for a brief rest before continuing the long descent through moorland and forest to Miriakamba.

3,560 m → 4,566 m · 13 KM · 12 H

Tonight · Second night at Miriakamba after descent.

Meals · Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

DAY 04

Miriakamba → Momella Gate

The final morning is a relaxed descent through the lush lower forest of Arusha National Park. With luck, you may spot giraffe, buffalo, warthog, or colobus monkeys once more as you make your way back to the gate. At Momella Gate, successful climbers receive their summit certificates before transferring onward to Arusha

Altitude FAQ

  • If your schedule allows, Meru remains one of the best natural acclimatisation curves in East Africa — you sleep three nights progressively higher without touching Kilimanjaro’s crater until you arrive fresh. If Meru-only, we tighten the hut nights to suit your timetable.

  • No — Meru grades medium overall, but ridge exposure on summit morning can feel airy. Wilderness First Response cover is mandatory on Ascend expeditions.

  • Mount Meru provides excellent altitude acclimatization while being less crowded and more scenic than many expect. It allows trekkers to gain confidence at high altitude before attempting Kilimanjaro’s summit.

  • Unlike Kilimanjaro, a Mount Meru climb passes through active wildlife zones inside Arusha National Park. The trek combines safari-like wildlife encounters with volcanic crater scenery and narrow summit ridges.

  • The crater rim near Socialist Peak includes exposed sections that require careful footing, especially before sunrise. However, no technical climbing is required, and experienced guides lead the route safely.

  • Many travelers focus only on Mount Kilimanjaro, which leaves Mount Meru quieter and less crowded. Trekkers often describe it as one of Tanzania’s most scenic climbs because of its wildlife, forests, volcanic landscapes, and panoramic summit views.

  • Yes. Many trekkers climb Mount Meru first and then continue to Kilimanjaro a few days later. This combination improves acclimatization and increases summit success rates on Kilimanjaro.

  • The most demanding section is summit night from Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak. The climb is steep, takes place in cold pre-dawn conditions, and includes exposed crater rim walking at high altitude.

  • Unlike most Kilimanjaro routes, Mount Meru trekking uses mountain huts instead of camping. Trekkers stay at Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut during the climb.

  • Reaching Socialist Peak at sunrise is one of the highlights of trekking in Tanzania. On clear mornings, climbers can see ash cones inside the crater and distant views of Mount Kilimanjaro above the clouds.

  • No. Compared to Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru receives far fewer trekkers, making the trails quieter and the overall experience more remote and peaceful.

  • Mount Meru trekking passes through rainforest, giant heather moorland, volcanic crater terrain, and narrow alpine ridges. The mountain offers one of the most diverse trekking landscapes in East Africa.
