8 Days Lemosho Route Luxury

Londorossi Gate (2,360m/ 7,742ft) – Mti Mkubwa camp (2,895m/ 9,498ft)

We depart Moshi for Londorossi Gate, which takes about 4 hours, where you will complete entry formalities. Then drive to the Lemosho trailhead (another hour to reach the trailhead). Upon arrival at trailhead, we eat lunch, then commence through undisturbed forest which winds to the first campsite.

Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,895m/ 9,498ft) – Shira 1 Camp (3500m/11,500ft)

Following breakfast, our journey proceeds as the path gradually inclines, leading us into the expansive heather moorland zone. Along the way, we will cross multiple streams before advancing over the Shira Ridge. From there, we descend gently to reach Shira 1 Camp, nestled alongside a stream on the Shira Plateau.

Shira 1 Camp (3500m/11,500ft) - Shira 2 Camp (3,847m/ 12,621 ft)

After enjoying breakfast, a serene trek across the plateau will guide us to Shira 2 Camp, nestled amidst the picturesque moorland meadows alongside a gently flowing stream. This day on the Shira Plateau provides excellent opportunities for acclimatization and offers various hiking options to explore.

Shira 2 Camp (3,847m/ 12,621 ft) to Barranco Camp (4000m/13,000ft)

From the Shira Plateau, we proceed eastward along a ridge, bypassing the junction leading to the Kibo peak. As our journey continues, we shift our direction to the southeast, heading towards the prominent Lava Tower, often referred to as the "Shark's Tooth" (elevation: 4650m/15,250ft). Shortly after passing the tower, we reach a second junction that leads to the Arrow Glacier. From here, we descend to the Barranco Camp. It's worth noting that although we end the day at a similar elevation to where we started, this day plays a crucial role in acclimatization, preparing our bodies for the challenges of the summit day ahead.

Barranco Camp (4000m/13,000ft) to Karanga Camp (4050m/13,250ft)

Following breakfast, our journey leads us away from Barranco Camp, as we embark on a trek along a steep ridge that ascends the Barranco Wall. This challenging yet rewarding path eventually takes us to the Karanga Valley, where we find the junction connecting with the Mweka Trail. As we progress, the terrain's dynamics change, offering a mix of elevation gains and captivating scenery.

Karanga Camp (4050m/13,250ft) - Kosovo Camp (4870m/15,978ft)

Advancing on our journey, we proceed with determination towards the Kosovo Camp, taking the route via Barafu Camp. This segment of the expedition marks the culmination of completing the South Circuit, a pathway that rewards trekkers with panoramic vistas of the summit from diverse perspectives. Upon reaching the Kosovo Camp, a sense of accomplishment is accompanied by a well-deserved rest. As the sun descends, we settle into our campsite, savoring a satisfying dinner that fuels us for the upcoming endeavor. Amidst this serene setting, preparations for the highly anticipated summit day are meticulously attended to, ensuring that every detail is in place for the final push towards the peak.

Kosovo Camp (4870m/15,978ft) - Uhuru Peak(5,895m/ 19,341ft) - Mweka Camp(3,068m/ 10,065ft)

Around midnight, we begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella point on the Crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella point you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit.

The hike from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes the hike long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately one hour. Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Mweka Camp. On the way down from Uhuru, enjoy views of the mountain, crater, clouds and glaciers.

At Barafu Camp, eat breakfast and take a short break. You still have another three to five hours to go before reaching Mweka Camp.

Mweka Camp (3,068m/ 10,065ft) - Mweka gate (1,640m/ 5,380ft)

After breakfast, finish the trek with a descent to Mweka Gate. Your last hike on Kilimanjaro is a beautiful one, passing through Kilimanjaro’s cloud forest. Watch your step during the descent, as the trail can be slippery. Ascend Tanzania vehicles will be waiting at the lower station of Mweka Gate to take you back to Moshi. You will be able to buy t-shirts and sodas at the gate.
