In August 1871, Charles New became the first European to reach the snows at the height of 4,000 meters. In late 1889, the German geology professor Hans Meyer finally reached the top of Kilimanjaro in his 3rd attempt. Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller accompanied him and they both spent 16 days above 4,600 m during their Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing.

5 Key Kilimanjaro Routes

Mt. Kilimanjaro has five official routes that are used for the summit. All the routes lead to the Uhuru peak but they are significantly different from each other. Selecting the Best Kilimanjaro Routes depends on various factors such as-

  • How much scenic the route is?
  • What is the difficulty level?
  • How much traffic to meet on the way?
  • What is the acclimatization profile?
  • Overall summit success rate of the route?

Machame Route which is also known as Whisky Route is one of the popular routes that begin on the south side of the mountain. The Machame Route offers a high success rate as it is great for acclimatizing well.

Marangu Route is famous as ‘Coca Cola Route' offering Hut accomodation. Marangu Route considered as a cheap route with 5-day itinerary, however, it has a poor success rate due to lack of acclimatization.

Lemosho Route is one of the 'classic' Kilimanjaro Routes with picturesque scenery. Lemosho Route is one of the popular routes which usually done over 7 days.

Rongai Route is one of the less crowded routes of Kilimanjaro and considered as the most adventurous Routes of Kilimanjaro. Usually done over in 6 or 7 days.

Umbwe Route is the route like Machame begins on the south side of the mountain. However, the trek to Barranco Camp is short & steep where it joins up with the Lemosho / Machame Routes.
