With 3 volcanic cones namely Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira; Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano that created 3 million years ago. Volcanic activity at Shira started before 2.5 million years before. The last major volcano activity was recorded 1.9 million years before. The Shira Plateau at 3,800 meters is a natural caldera. Before the caldera formed it is believed that Shira was 4,900 m or 5,200 m high. The other peaks Mawenzi and Kibo started erupting about 1 million years ago. Both peaks were separated by Saddle Plateau at 4,400 meters height. Kibo is the largest cone on the mountain and the last activity here was dated to 150,000–200,000 years back. The last major eruption occurred on Kilimanjaro was 360,000 years ago.

History of Kilimanjaro :

The German officer Baron Carl Claus von der Decken attempted first to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro with English geologist R. Thornton. They both tried it in August 1861 but couldn’t go more than 2,500m. In August 1871, Charles New became the first European to reach the snows at the height of 4,000 meters. In late 1889, the German geology professor Hans Meyer finally reached the top of Kilimanjaro in his 3rd attempt. Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller accompanied him and they both spent 16 days above 4,600 m during their Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing.

Geography of Kilimanjaro :

Being the highest free-standing mountain in the world Kilimanjaro has its own geographical status. Its weather is very unique and unexpected at times.

The mountain goes through 5 climatic zones and dramatically changes its landscape every few meter height. The 5 climatic zones are; Rainforest zone, cultivation zone, heather- Mooreland zone, Alpine desert zone, and arctic zone.

The mountain’s foothill is covered by the spectacular Kilimanjaro National Park which is a UNSECO protected site. All the hikers need to pay park fees before entering the rainforest zone. From there the journey starts.

Rongai Route is one of the less crowded routes of Kilimanjaro and considered as the most adventurous Routes of Kilimanjaro. Usually done over in 6 or 7 days.
